1916 Ashburn Airfield in Chicago, IL

(Satellite, the southeast quadrant of Cicero and 83rd)

Glenn Ragaishis posted
Ashburn Airfield opened in 1916 at 83rd St. just east of Cicero Ave. on the southwest side of Chicago. This view is looking north. Considered Chicago’s first airport, it was supplanted by Municipal Airport (Midway). Early aviator Charles Lindbergh used the airfield as well as early US Mail operations and pilot training for WW1.
[The comments also mention airfields near Loyola, near 90th Street east of Harlem Avenue and in today's  Robbins, IL.]

The airport was in the southeast corner of the intersection. I noticed that 83rd bumps a little north between Cicero and Scottsdale Avenues.

  1. Maywood US Mail Airport shows up on the USGS Berwyn quad in 1928. ( https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/topoview/viewer/#13/41.8379/-87.8341 ) It is south of Roosevelt Rd. (Ill #6) and west of the Des Plains River. The road on the east is 1st Avenue and the buildings on the west are the first Hines VA Hospital buildings (opened in 1921). In 1945 the area is empty and Hines is marked. In 1953 it looks like buildings for Loyola University Medical Center are there. In 2015 there is Air Mail Drive along the south side.

    1. Thanks for the information. I've added an excerpt of that area from the 1932 map to the notes.
