1901+1925/1995 Trail/C&O Webster Run Bridge over Greenbrier River near Watoga, WV

(Bridge Hunter; no Historic Bridges; B&TSatellite)

Normally, I'd skip yet another truss bridge; but, when I read this was part of the Greenbrier River Trail, I decided to check it out. I learned about this trail just a couple of week ago when I studied the restoration of a bridge on this former-C&O route.

Near the small community of Watoga in West Virginia are two Warren through truss bridges which today carry the Greenbrier River Trail over the Greenbrier River. The original spans were completed for the Greenbrier Division of the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway in 1901. On May 4, 1925, a boxcar on a northbound freight train approaching the Watoga Bridge derailed, taking out the main span over the Greenbrier. It was quickly replaced with a new through truss by the American Bridge Company. The Bethlehem Steel Company replaced the secondary span with another through truss in 1929.

The C&O abandoned this route from North Caldwell to Cass in 1978. Chessie donated that 92-mile segment and removed the track by mid-1980. FEMA funds were awarded in 1992 to help repair the damage done by a 1985 flood, and the trail opened in 1994.
