The entire
"earthen dam" part is actually an overflow spillway.

James T Ebert I’ve never seen a lock completely submerged like this.

One of three photos posted by Steve J Crile M/V Joseph Patrick Eckstein heading up-river at Muscatine [An interesting view of the bridge and dam. (Update: In fact, it is too interesting. Since the tow appears close to the bridge, the bridge would be downstream of the dam if the tow is going up-river. But maps show that the bridge is upstream of the dam.)] |

posted five photos with the comment: "That's one impressive crane! @Lock 16 near Muscatine. Not really sure what the objective of the work is. I noticed there is one less gate (see pic) that's been laying on it's side near the lock for over a year....maybe this is the gate that's currently hooked up to the crane."
Jess Mumma: That’s the rock island district army Corp of engineers newest boat the Quincy with their new crane...they just had the boat christened in Quincy last week and it’s headed back home to base in Leclaire, IA I believe where there may be a christening for the crane??!

While looking for something else, I caught a tow in the process of double-locking through this lock

posted three photos with the comment: "Corps of Engineer's towboat
Mississippi at Lock and Dam 16 heading up-river 8/9/21."
[I've seen comments on various posts that characterize this as the world's largest party boat. USACE uses it for "inspection tours" with dignitaries. After all, you don't need three engines to push one barge.]

Jan Danielsen: The docks have been removed at Leach Park boat ramp Bettendorf, Iowa and at Big Slough Thomson, Illinois. I imagine more places by now. Climbed in our boat from the bank yesterday pool 13 Thomson. 😀 It's that time of year.

David Webster posted #whereiswebbie Brad Montgomery: Easy peasy sb at 16 [I assume sb means southbound. But it looks northbound, or upbound, to me. The arch of the Norbert F. Beckey Bridge must be out-of-frame on the right. Some comments talk about the locks closing around the 24th.] |
Two screenshots from the first video
posted by Debbie Hansohn Felsing. From the land visible in the right background starting around 2:57, I'm guessing it is going through this lock.
