Angel Binner shared a USACE St. Paul District photo New miter gates enroute to Lock & Dam 2. Two deck hands are circled to demonstrate the size. https://go.usa.gov/xFcwy Locks and Dam 2’s miter gates are original from the 1940s. Over time, the gates have been damaged and distressed, which has led to serviceability and safety issues. The new upstream gates are 27 feet tall and weigh 256,000 pounds, while the downstream gates are 30 feet tall and weigh 266,000 pounds. The new gates will increase navigational longevity and operational readiness in support of the economically significant navigation infrastructure. Dave Harrington: Did these gates come up from the USACE yard at L&D 14, or does the St. Paul district have its own build/repair site? Angel Binner: Dave Harrington came up from rock island. |
Two photos from USACE's announcement. Each had the caption: "New miter gates for Lock and Dam 2 in Hastings, Minn., lock through Lock and Dam 10 in Guttenberg, Iowa, July 7. The gates will be installed at Lock and Dam 2 the weeks of July 19-30, 2021."
From the article: "The new upstream gates are 27 feet tall and weigh 256,000 pounds, while the downstream gates are 30 feet tall and weigh 266,000 pounds."

USACE posted two photos with the comment: "THEN AND NOW: On this day in 1928, the St. Paul District awards a contract for the construction of Lock and Dam 2 in Hastings, Minnesota. It is the first large Corps project to be constructed by private contractors in the district. Previous large projects had been built with government plant and contract labor. 1 of 12 photos and a video posted by Debarah Holdgrafer Dave Harrington: One thing I've noticed about high water. It takes less time to raise/lower the chamber than it does to open/close the gates. [It appears that the Spring 2023 snowmelt is still in progress.] |
