CSS&SB used to run on Chicago Ave. in East Chicago

CSS&SB = Chicago, South Shore & South Bend     It is the last interurban railroad to operate in the USA. But the freight operations have switched from electric to diesel locomotives.

William Shapotkin posted two photos with the comment:
Many are familiar with the South Shore's "East Chicago Bypass," which relocated the railroad along with Indiana Toll Road and out of the streets of East Chicago. Well, before construction of the "bypass" trains operated in Chicago Ave thru East Chicago -- as witness by locos #1001-1009 leading a W/B frt down Chicago Ave in East Chicago, IN. Photos taken Oct 4, 1947 by Doug Traxler. Wm Shapotkin Collection.
Jason Clark Is that double track street running I see?
William Shapotkin Yes it is.

I was not aware of the street running in East Chicago. Thanks for the pictorial history lesson. It looks like the building in the first photo that is past the locomotives is still standing on the south side of the street. Judging by the trucks parked in the back of the street view, it is still a functioning post office.
