Hennepin Canal overview
The railroad just south of the lock is the IAIS/Rock Island. The Hennepin Canal was built because enough people felt that the rates charged by the Rock Island were too high.
This view is looking West, the north tower is hard to see because of the trees.

After the Canal finally opened at lock 26, bridge 40, several employees complained about the job because it had “too many ups and downs”. All original photos are from my personal collection.

I would like to share the following drawings and notes regarding my choice as a college project many years ago, regarding the Hennipen Girder Lift Bridges constructed to allow the flow of canal and land based traffic. My purpose was to design the mechanism which would be needed to raise and lower bridge since the structure to facilitate this procedure was removed some time ago for obvious reasons.
Shown in the photo is Bridge #26 which is familiar to many. Having fish at this location w friends and family many times presented an opportunity to study the structure closely when the fish weren’t biting. When the opportunity to presented itself for Engineering class credit, would satisfy two objectives.
Besides physically measuring the structure and using a combination of learned calculations provided a reasonable best guess as to what I would use to physically raise a 25 ton structure powered by only one person within an acceptable time and effort. There was one key component that was also missing in addition to the crank mechanism and that was a transversely mounted Jack shaft to translate equal forces applied to the rack and pinion systems of which there are four, one per tower. Not included in my final presentation is the number of rotations on the Jack shaft needed to lift the bridge the required 12’ for passage clearance of the canal traffic. If anyone would want to take calculated guess, based on the drawing provided, please be my guest. (BTW, semester grade was a “A”).
