2004 Eshima Ohashi (Roller Coaster) Bridge in Japan

(3D Satellite)

Once again, a telephoto lens can be deceptive.

Eshima Ohashi Bridge, Japan
Located in Western Japan, the Eshima Ohashi Bridge looks more like a roller coaster than a road. It links the city of Matsue in Shimane Prefecture to Sakaiminato in Tottori Prefecture and is basically a highway to outer space, a shortcut to vomiting from nausea, making driving over this thing one seriously thrilling car ride. The bridge is a two-lane concrete road. It rises so sharply that it gives the bravest drivers fear, featuring a ridiculously steep slope that allows ships to pass underneath it.

This is the same bridge. It's all in the angle in which the picture was taken. [Actually, it is the size of the telescope lens.]

The same bridge

The bridge is 1.4km (0.9 mile) long.  Looking at a 3D Satellite image, much of that length is over land because of the long approaches. The grade is 6.1%.  The bridge was completed in 2004 and is 44.7 (147') high. It replaced a movable bridge with a weight limit of 14 tons.
[The article confirms that this view is from the "Eshima Large Bridge photographing spot" vantage point. And it confirms that a telephoto lens is needed to get the optical illusion of a steep grade. I believe that Interstate highways have grades up to 7%.]

Every "steep bridge" photo I saw of this bridge shows a jig-jog in the bridge. But I can't find those curves in either a satellite image nor a street view.

Only one side has a grade of 6.1%. The other side is 5.1%.

It was built from 1997 to 2004.
"It's one of the most spectacular bridges in the world....The bridge is 1.7 km (1.1 mi) long with a width of 11.3 meters. It’s 44.7 meters tall and its longest span is 250 meters. It’s the third-largest bridge of its type in the world, and the largest rigid frame bridge in Japan." [Note the length of 1.7km instead of 1.4km. And I wonder what "its type" is. Box-girder arch?]
