The fire was "thermally treated." (That is a term I saw in an article about tank cars burning after a derailment. I presume it means they let it burn itself out.) The volunteer fire department had equipment and training to fight brush fires, not a trestle already engulfed in flames. Even if they had better equipment, there would not have been enough water to extinguish the fire.
