1966,1996 I-80 Fred Schwengel Memorial Bridge over Mississippi River at Le Claire, IA

This bridge is so boring that I have yet to document it. On the other hand, it is rather impressive that you can cross the Mississippi River with a steel girder bridge.

"In 1995, this bridge was officially named in memory of Fred Schwengel, an 8-term Congressman from Iowa who was key in getting the Interstate Highway Act passed into law."

Dennis DeBruler: Catching that semi-truck trailer helps one appreciate the size of the steel girders.
Jan Danielsen: Dennis DeBruler Thanks for noticing that.

"Work on the substructure of the 3,486-foot [1063m] bridge began in October 1963, and superstructure work started in October 1965. The bridge rests on 27 piers, and has a 370-foot center span carrying traffic over the main channel of the Mississippi." It was dedicated on Oct 27, 1966.

Even though the bridge looks boring, fabricating and installing those main span girders must have been rather exciting. The depth dwarfs a pickup truck.

It underwent major rehabilitation in 1996.

Another photo with a semi-truck on it for scale.

Images from a video on the Bison Bridge project website at bisonbridge.org show renderings of the planned bridge, which would include a bison crossing with grazing land in both Iowa and Illinois as well as a pedestrian crossing and bison viewing area, along with a visitor center. The proposal would save the $30m to $40m it would cost to remove the bridge.
