"Built in 1893 and with a main span of 405 feet [125m], this is an extremely long simple span truss bridge for its age."

"The US HWY 60 Bridge in Frankfort is known as the Singing Bridge. The bridge has a metal grate style deck which makes a unique 'humming' sound when vehicles drive over the structure."

Wonder if they had GPS?

Great shot. GPS is not that useful when you can only go one way (downstream) I doubt they could turn around and head back to Beattyville with that arrangement, and certainly couldn't strike off cross-country.

1937 Flood

Sam Terry's Kentucky posted four photos with the comment:
January 27, 1937 - The gas main on the famed “Singing Bridge” in downtown Frankfort, exploded during the great flood of 1937.
While the flooding of the Ohio River devastated Louisville, other locations endured the flood as well. In Frankfort, where the Kentucky River bisects the city, more than 2,000 residents had to flee their homes. Fear of the flood waters caused inmates in the penitentiary located downtown to riot. Twenty-four inmates escaped and the National Guard was charged with evacuating 2,900 inmates to other jails.
The river rose to 47.2 feet and caused around $700,000 worth of damage in Frankfort alone (In today's dollars that would translate to more than $12million).
Rain began falling on January 6 and continued for 27 days. It was estimated that the combination of rain, ice, snow, and sleet had deposited 41.25 quadrillion gallons of water which left 981 miles of the Ohio River above flood level. For nearly a month, water covered 15,000 miles of highways causing the evacuation of over a million people.
