I believe this is the Baldwin plant near Philadelphia circa 1920, and those are Southern Pacific 2-10-2's awaiting delivery (the tenders appear to be lettered "Southern Pacific Lines"). SP had ordered a large group of 2-10-2s that were built but were stored at Baldwin due to a downturn in the economy. When they were finally delivered they were sent West in 3-4 solid trains billed as the Prosperity Specials. Many publicity photos were taken at Baldwin and along the line.
Baldwin, along with Alco and Lima, where the major manufactures of steam locomotives by the 20th century. I had not planned on doing a posting on Baldwin because to do it justice, it would have to be big. And in mid-20th century it gets depressing because it took Lima and
Whitcomb down with it. But Andrew's picture and Cliff's information was just too fascinating to pass up.
