It seems they are doing an experiment of how big will the log jams get.

The piers are from the 1906 rebuild. Two spans were replaced in 1914 as a permanent repair for 1913 flood damage and the remaining three spans were replaced in 1925. Some of the stone work in the abutments may date back to the 1830's canal aqueduct. [Bridge Hunter]
