Aban/Conrail/Big4/P&E 1921 Trestle over Middle Fork Vermilion River

(Bridge Hunter; no Historic Bridges; 3D Satellite)

P&E = Peoria & Eastern
This trestle is named the Possum Trot Bridge.

Work is progressing to make this part of the Kickapoo Rail Trail between Urbana and Danville, IL. [WCIA (source)]

Note the girders peaking through the top of the trees on the right. I included the footings in the foreground. They were for the wood bents of an interurban (Illinois Traction System) bridge

This view shows the hybrid nature of this trestle. Specifically, the approach across the flood plain on the east side is a standard steel tower trestle whereas the part over the river is a steel girder bridge with tall piers.

The bridge appears to have two concrete piers and eleven steel towers.

This shows the new decking that is being added to the trestle for the trail after they removed the ties. It is a quarter mile long and will connect the trail system of the Kickapoo State Park with the Vermilion Fairgrounds. Canoes, kayaks and bikes can be rented from Kickapoo Adventures. I assume renters go upstream first so that the paddle back to the rental place is easer. Thus they wouldn't be downstream by the interurban footings. Trying to thread a canoe between those footings looks like it would be rather difficult. Nonetheless, there are a lot of photos in Bridge Hunter that were probably taken with access from the river.

Mike Friedman: This state park is reclaimed coal strip mines, it was the first one to do that, back in 1939.

In some areas, the reclamation did not make much of an effort to "smooth" the swaths left by the strip mining.
