Dan Bartlett posted Two or three days a week I hop on the UP-West at Kedzie. Anyone got a picture of the station and tower back in the day and can give me a little history? My grandfather, who worked for the CNW, said this was more or less an employee stop for employees going to the 40th Street yard and engine terminal. Jeff Bloomdahl the employee stop was at Keeler Ave.Thats where the roundhouse and back shops were.Kedzie was a regular stop Sears was close by and lot of factorys.Crew callers were at Kedzie. The original tower was on the north side of the tracks, this was built in the in the early 80's.. The tower controlled the interlocking there including movement in and out the of the coach yard, M19a ( the diesel shop) and movement on the Rockwell Sub which is the freight tracks that go south to Ogden ave were they connect with the NS CSX and the entrance to Global one inter-modal yard .Some time in the 90's (can't remember when} control of this area was transferred to a remote location in Northlake who controls everything thing from Elmhurst east. I don't believe the tower controlled M19A. When I worked in suburban service I remember a switchtender at Pulaski Ave. David Daruszka I meant to say movement from M19A to the coach yard.I vaguely remember having to call Kedzie for permission to proceed to the tower with light power. Author Thanks all. Every now and then there's UP guy working around there. Maybe I'll ask for a peek inside... The signal maintainer's ( people who take care of the signal and switchs) use the building to store equipment. |

The ILHAP site is not working this evening so I can't get an old aerial view of the previous tower on the north side.
There are two tracks on the south side that are dedicated to going from Sacramento Blvd. to the Rockwell Wye so that they are closer to this tower. Then there are several crossovers between Kedzie and Sacramento to allow trains on the mainline to switch over to the Rockwell Sub.
