Mike Yuhas posted Three shots of City of Louisville headed southbound into Lock 6, July 7, 2021, 4:52 pm! Dennis DeBruler: I Googled the towboat. It is a twin-screw with Kort nozzles, not Z-drives. So how does it get a strong sideways propwash? |
Comparing the water levels at the extra lock gate, it appears the river is running high. But the gates are still in the water. Or does this dam have a small lift? I could not find the normal lift height for these locks.
The gates out of the water is another reminder that 2019 was a wet year in much of the USA.

Fort Loudoun Lock posted Here's an example of a helper boat assisting a larger commercial tow with 12-15 barges headed downbound entering Lock & Dam #6 (Trempealeau, WI) on the Upper Miss...In some circumstances the locks on the UMR experience outdraft conditions due to strong river currents that can carry barges away from the lock wall, which necessitates the helper boat service from the "Miss P" to help keep the tow properly aligned during the approach to the lock. Safety First 🥇! [This was added to "To scrape or not to scrape" as another example of a towboat shoving a tow up against the lock wall to fight the outdraft.] |
