As we have seen with other Strauss trunnion bridges, these "elephant ear" counterweights have square holes so that it is easy to adjust the weight to keep the bridge balanced.

I'm glad that experienced railfans are motivated to get out in industrial areas when capturing the Big Boy to avoid the crowds. Note that since this is not a "railfan area," the smoke stack is not "putting on a show" and pouring out black smoke.

This 1920 bridge replaced the original 1881 swing bridge.
