CSX/L&N/NC&SL/Western & Atlantic Tunnels under Chetoogeta Mountain in Tunnel Hill, GA

Satellite: (East Portals, West Portals)

We are looking at the current tunnel in this street view. The previous tunnel is to the right obscured by trees. The building on the left was the L&N Depot and the building on the right is the Western & Atlantic Railroad Tunnel Museum. That building is the historic Clisby Austin House that was built in 1848. It "was used as a Confederate field hospital in 1862-1863 and as a headquarters for Union General William T. Sherman in May of 1864 as he planned his famous Atlanta Campaign." The tunnel was the "final connection point between Chattanooga and Atlanta, connecting 137 miles of railroad tracks." Both the house and tunnels have been used in various movies. This view is east of the museum building and shows a covered bridge and a train coming out of the current tunnel.

The covered bridge. BridgeHunter-1850 says this is a modern covered bridge.

The bike path on the left is the old train route to the old tunnel. On the other side of the fence is the new train tracks.

Tunnel Hill Tunnels
The new (1928) tunnel on the NC&StL at Tunnel Hill, Georgia. The older tunnel, now open as part of a museum, is barely visible on the right behind a berm and weeds. The tunnel is a little more than 450 metres long (1477 feet).
