I have focused so much on the railroad bridges, that I have ignored the road bridge. This photo taught me that the road bridge is significant in its own right. Before this bridge was built, vehicles had to use a ferry.
MightyMac.org - The Mackinac Bridge & Straits of Mackinac posted The International Bridge at Sault Ste Marie opened 59 years ago today, October 31, 1962. Philip Fish: I had the opportunity to inspect this bridge, it is one of the best maintained bridges I have ever encountered. Hats off to the International Bridge Authority, they do a great job!! Aileen Seguino: How long is this bridge? just curious MightyMac.org - The Mackinac Bridge & Straits of Mackinac: 5 miles [HistoricBridges puts the length at 2.76 miles. That is more believable.] |
This is the best overview I have seen. This is also a good view of the Soo Locks before the two old locks are replaced by one big lock.

One advantage of road bridges is that it is generally easy to get a portal view.

Since it is a double-arch bridge, it is more interesting from the road level than most bridges.

This is where the two arches meet.

We can also get a view of the controlling works for the St. Marys River. Part of the Algoma Steel Works is in the right background and in the left background we see a ship headed to the Soo Locks. And CN is doing some maintenance work on the railroad bridge.
