CN+Amtrak/IC Bridge over Kankakee River

(Bridge Hunter, Historic Bridges, Birds-Eye View)

20160603 3426, taken from McMullin Drive

Time stamp: 5:33pm
I spent enough time in the area that the Amtrak Illini that was scheduled at 5:12pm left the station and crossed the bridge, which provided some scale.

Fortunately, it was accelerating slowly enough that I had a chance to run back to the river to get some pictures. You can see by the exhaust that the engine was still pulling hard to get back up to track speed.
Taken from a platform that allows safe fishing in the dam's turbulence

As a child, my Grandma would walk us down to Washington Avenue. We would watch as my Grandfather 'drove' the train into the depot. Several hours later, he would return home for dinner with Hardee's in his hand.
40 years later, I still love seeing those arches

Casey Raymond: The city of kankakee has a live cam step up near the hydro plant at the south end looking north over the dam at the bridge and you can watch the trains when the pass thru

Here's the full 5x7 negative...the Kankakee image I posted earlier was just a little detail of this...that's how fantastic glass negatives are! That's the ICRR bridge!
[So the "fishing platform" is really the foundation of an old water mill. Probably a grist mill. That would be the reason the dam was built.]
Out of curiosity, I found his earlier posting:

Lance Wales Look at those Chicago Central hoppers! They got just over 200 of them for 2 sets in coal service. They were probably limited to company service by this point.

Thought I'd make my first post the bridge over the Kankakee River in Kankakee Illinois...this is the CN, formerly the Illinois Central...this is in between the 'freightyards full of old black men' and the graveyards of rusted automobiles' Arlo sung about...photos by Ken Smith..

Dennis DeBruler Wow, you can barely tell there is a dam in the river.
Derek A. Walsh commented on Ken's posting
Was already a fan of this bridge before I knew there was a dam there.

Six years ago today: on 9/7/2014, the since destroyed AMTK 66 led P390, the northbound Saluki, over the IC bridge at Kankakee.

A pair of GTW GP9Rs, both still in their classic blue paint, lead the local north across the Kankakee River in its namesake town of Kankakee.
Dennis DeBruler You also caught a heavy flow over the dam.
