1977 WV+OH-807 Bridge over Ohio River at St Marys, WV

(Bridge Hunter; no Historic Bridges; Satellite, it is nice seeing a truss bridge with a fresh coat of paint.)

The official name is Hi Carpenter Memorial Bridge.

This shows an advantage of the cantilever bridge design, namely the span over the navigation channel can be constructed without any falsework. Falsework was probably used to build the anchor span on the shore side of the pier. That falsework would have been removed once the anchor span was completed.

The bridge at St. Mary's was being built at this time [Jan 1977].

This bridge replaced the 1928 eye-bar suspension bridge that was a sister of the Silver Bridge that collapsed on Dec 15, 1967. There was no debate about whether or not the Silver Bridge had to be replaced since it was rubble. It was replaced by the Silver Memorial Bridge in less than two years. But the eye-bar bridge at this location took a decade to replace. And it was closed during that decade.

[This web page describes the timeline for the construction of this bridge.]
"Overall length is 2579 feet, with a 900 feet channel span over the river affording 830 feet of horizontal clearance to navigation and 69 feet of minimum vertical clearance above normal pool water. The bridge has four 12 feet travel lanes and a concrete median divider and a 5 feet walk way.
Total cost of the completed structure was listed as $25.1 million."

An approach span for the eye-bar bridge still exists because it provides a connection to an island.
