This historic look at the Evanston station construction really highlights the incredible scale of early 20th-century civic engineering. My grandfather actually worked on similar municipal brick and concrete infrastructure projects back in the day, and he always spoke about the sheer precision required to install those massive early pumps. It’s fascinating to see these archival photos capturing the raw, industrial bones of the facility before it became a permanent fixture of the local landscape. Lately, I’ve been helping a client redesign a commercial patio nearby, sourcing durable outdoor furniture that can stand up to the shifting Midwestern elements while honoring the area's classic architectural aesthetic. Seeing these historical roots makes you appreciate how much thought goes into building things meant to last for generations, whether it's essential underground utility networks or the high-end design layouts we enjoy above ground today. Seeing how they set those heavy pumps piece by piece is a great reminder of that timeless craftsmanship
