LSX/Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Bridge over Susquehanna River at West Pittston, PA

(Bridge Hunter; no Historic Bridges; 3D Satellite)

LSX = Luzerne & Susquehanna Railway, obviously a shortline

I labeled these notes rrErie even though it was DL&W in 1928 because that label is more informative than rrMisc.

I'm surprised that Historic Bridges doesn't have this bridge because it appears to be pin connected and HB documents several other bridges in this county.

I noticed the "orange water" under the east side of the bridge. That water comes from the Lackawanna River.

The orange pollution is a point source. A comment explains: "The orange is acid mine drainage from abandoned coal mine. There was a major disaster, The Knox Mine Disaster in 1959. The river burst into the mines. In order to help release some water they created a bore hole in Old Forge which has pumped out polluted water continuously since 1961."

  1. The orange is acid mine drainage from abandoned coal mine. There was a major disaster, The Knox Mine Disaster in 1959. The river burst into the mines. In order to help release some water they created a bore hole in Old Forge which has pumped out polluted water continuously since 1961. The orange stain is visible from Google earth.
