"Built as a spur of the main line of the old Louisville & Nashville Railroad, to bypass the Union Station downtown." [BridgeHunter] "All foundations were carried down to bed rock to a depth of 130' below base of rail. In three of the cofferdams considerable difficulty was experienced from encountering open conduits leading to the city waterwork pumping station, close to one end of the bridge." The "power plant" is part of the
Omohundro Water Treatment Plant. It is an 1888 pumping station. You can still see the conveyor used to unload coal from barges. I wonder where the coal pile used to be.
Nicely done! I remember being so enthralled by that trestle as a child. I can still remember being at my aunt's house on Hody Drive at night in winter and seeing the lights of the WW plant reflecting off the water. There is also a track running next to the WW plant. That Waterwork plant is over 100 years old.It was the only working plant in the city after the 2010 Flood.
