Each bridge has a tunnel on the west side of the river: (Satellite)
And there is another pair of tunnels a little further west: (Satellite)
The L&N used to be double tracked and each track had a bridge and tunnel. The route was converted to CTC in the late 1980s and the northern bridge and tunnels were then abandoned. [B&T]
I used Bridge Hunter for the date of the abandoned bridge. B&T indicates this route opened in 1916.

Fort Boonesborough State Park posted and BridgeHuntger-1883 Once again our Thursday Throwback post is another undated photo in our continuing series on the sawmill boom town of Ford, KY located just upstream from Fort Boonesborough State Park on the Kentucky River. This photo shows men, located in the center of the photo, working the massive log rafts. The original L & N Railroad Bridge is located in the background and parts of a sawmill operation, most likely Burt and Brabb Lumber, is seen on the right. The park would be about a mile beyond the bridge on the left bank of the river. Geneva Edwards: A lot of people lost their lives walking and working the logs bc when one would roll and they slip either they would be crushed by the logs or drown bc they couldn’t come back up. |
L&N repurposed some of the 1883 bridge to build a pedestrian walkway across their railyard in Ravenna, KY.
Back in 1974, both bridges had a good paint job.

By 1990, the northern bridge had been abandoned because Karl found two opposing trains using the southern bridge. Since it was abandoned, why did the northern bridge have a better looking paint job? (How lucky I am that the bulkhead car was empty so that I could see the northern bridge in this timeframe.)
Last of 8 photos posted by Marty Bernard A Nice CSX Meet Sequence One CSX train comes out of a tunnel, crosses a bridge, and meets another CSX train waitig in a sidung. Then the second train leaves the siding and approaches the bridge and the tunnel. No information as to location. Date circa 1990. A neat sequence and location. Karl Miller photographs. [EDIT] This is Ford, KY. Marty Bernard shared |
Today, both bridges have a bad paint job.
