The bridge was built as a truss bridge in 1884. By 1923, a lift span was added.

The bridge was replaced in 1981 because the old one was destroyed by a flood in 1977. I wondered why the bridge still needed a movable span. I discovered that the Erie Canal joins the Hudson River about two miles upstream at Waterford, NY.

This is the post that motivated the research.

This is the Green Island Bridge, which connects Green Island, NY and Troy, NY. It is a vertical lift bridge that was built in 1981 and carries Federal Street over the Hudson River.

On March 15, 1977, a span and the tower collapsed because a flood compromised a pier. Some citizens heard loud noises and were able to stop the traffic before the span failed. Consequently, there were no injuries even though the bridge carried over 22,000 vehicles per day at that time. It took $23m and four years to replace the bridge.
