1924 MVs Benson Ford and Henry Ford II were the first diesel lake freighters

(Satellite, the preserved wheelhouse)

I've seen a photo of a crane lifting the wheelhouse off the boat, but now I cant find it. :-(

The name Benson Ford was also one of the names for the current Kaye E. Barker.

The Ford Marine Division Motor Vessel Benson Ford (built 1924) is shown here heavily laden with iron ore for the Rouge. She and her sister ship, the Henry Ford II, were the first diesel lake freighters. They were each powered by a huge Sun-Doxford opposed piston diesel engine that was made at Sun Shipbuilding in Philadelphia, under license from Doxford of England. Sun was one of the places where my Mom applied during the War, but she ended up working for Leeds & Northrup making components for the Manhattan Project.
Graham Whitfield: That’s very interesting that the Ships engines were built under licence from Doxford England. William Doxford Shipbuilding were based in Sunderland North East England. They developed a Standard Merchant Ship, Engines and components very successfully and ahead of the time. This was at odds with the expensive custom made Ships that caused the demise of Britain’s once huge Shipbuilding industry. They were Nationalised into British Shipbuilders in 1980’s with a number of very inefficient Yards which was a disaster and the industry collapsed in 1986.
James Torgeson: Graham Whitfield Henry Ford was ahead of his time in many things, in others, not so much…
