MWRD posted on Jan 23, 2022 A view to the south showing California Avenue and a bridge over what was previously the I&M Canal in Chicago on June 16, 1920. In the years after the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal was completed, the I&M Canal became obsolete with shallow, stagnant water. Some areas were filled in and eventually Interstate 55 was built on the canal right-of-way between Bridgeport and Summit, Illinois.
