California Avenue Bridge over the I&M Canal

(Satellite, I-55 was built on the RoW of the canal)

A view to the south showing California Avenue and a bridge over what was previously the I&M Canal in Chicago on June 16, 1920. In the years after the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal was completed, the I&M Canal became obsolete with shallow, stagnant water. Some areas were filled in and eventually Interstate 55 was built on the canal right-of-way between Bridgeport and Summit, Illinois.

Jim Ritchie: notice the fence-line LH side of photo .... filled in the canal for the fence ... leaving both bridges intact
