Our #PittsburghDistrict has seen highs and lows on the rivers over the years. Last April 2024 we saw the highest water level in decades, but check out this image of Loyalhanna Lake from July 5, 1944. At the bottom of the dam, you can see four trash gates, which are normally several feet under water! |

In response to the damaged incurred from the Great Flood of 1936, Congressman Robert G. Allen of Greensburg requested construction of a dam on the Loyalhanna Creek, 4.5 miles above its confluence with the Conemaugh at Saltsburg. Construction of the combined concrete gravity and earth embankment Loyalhanna Creek Dam commenced in February 1939. The Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company completed the $5.4 million Loyalhanna Dam in June 1942. |
