BNSF/Santa Fe Bridge over Pecos River near Fort Sumner, NM

(Bridge HunterSatellite)

I think this is the first time I have seen so many tall concrete piers used across dry land. Normally viaducts are built with steel towers or, in the case of old bridges in the East, open-spandrel concrete arches.

Extra 5585 West crosses the Pecos River Bridge just west of Fort Sumner, NM on May 16, 1978. If you look just below the bridge you can see the town in the distance. - CarrTracks photo
