Parade traffic and the public gather for the official dedication and opening of the California Avenue bridge over the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal on September 30, 1926, viewed looking south from the Illinois Central railroad viaduct. The sign on the bridge reads "The Sanitary District of Chicago, California Avenue Bridge. West Side and South Side United. Official Dedication Thursday, Sept. 30th, 2 p.m. COME." The Sanitary District of Chicago was later renamed the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago.
